Ned Hockman was a pioneer combat photographer and documentary filmmaker for the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He also served in Korea. He began filming OU football games in the mid-1940s before Bud Wilkinson was coach, and worked as the official director and cinematographer of OU sports for forty years. He joined the faculty at OU in 1960 as a special lecturer, and became a full professor in 1979. In 1984, he received the title David Ross Boyd Distinguished Professor of Journalism and Mass Communications. Hockman trained photo-journalists at summer institutes on the OU campus for four decades. He retired from OU in 1987, and was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 1996.
