Liesa L. Richter
Liesa L. Richter is the Floyd & Martha Norris Chair in Law and a George Lynn Cross Research Professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Law. She earned her juris doctorate degree at the University of Florida in 1995, graduating first in her class with high honors. At Florida Law, Richter served as the senior notes and comments editor for the “Florida Law Review” and was elected to Order of the Coif. She began her career in commercial litigation with King & Spalding LLP in Atlanta. Richter then served as a law clerk for the Hon. Jack T. Camp in the District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and for the Hon. Frank Mays Hull on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
In 2001, Richter joined the faculty at the University of Oklahoma College of Law, teaching thousands of aspiring lawyers and dedicating her career to helping students realize their dreams of entering the legal profession. Richter believes every student deserves the support necessary to make the most of a legal education and has spent countless hours mentoring the OU students to further their life goals. Richter has also served the college of law in many administrative capacities, including associate dean for academics, associate dean for research and associate dean for admissions. She has served on committee A, the curriculum committee, and as chair of the admissions committee.
An energetic scholar, Richter’s research focuses on federal evidentiary policy and rulemaking, and her articles have appeared in journals such as the “Columbia Law Review,” the “Minnesota Law Review,” and the “Iowa Law Review.” In addition, Richter is a co-author of multiple evidence texts and treatises, including the widely respected “Evidence” by Mueller, Kirkpatrick & Richter (6th ed. 2018), which has been cited by the United States Supreme Court.
Richter has also dedicated her career to serving the legal profession at the national level. She is the academic consultant for the Judicial Conference Evidence Advisory Committee responsible for drafting and proposing federal rules of evidence amendments. She also serves on the Evidence Drafting Committee for the National Conference of Bar Examiners, which prepares drafts and reviews the evidence questions for the multistate bar exam. Richter is a member of the American Law Institute and of the executive committee for the evidence section of the American Association of Law Schools.
