LeRoy H. Fischer

LeRoy H. Fischer taught history at Oklahoma State University from 1946 to 1984. Fischer was Oppenheim Regents Professor from 1973-1978 and Oppenheim Professor from 1969-1984. His special research interest was the American Civil War, for which he won two special literary prizes. Fischer and others worked to save, restore, and refurbish the Oklahoma Museum of Higher Education, known as “Old Central,” listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fischer helped found the Friends of Old Central, now the Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society, to assure the remembrance of the history of higher education in Oklahoma. Fischer was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 2002.
