Bruce Baxter Owen

Bruce Baxter Owen started his career in 1954 as chair of the Division of Communications at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma. Owen was named chair of the Division of Arts and Letters in 1967 at the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts and served in that position until 1971. From 1972 to 1987, he was Vice President for Instruction at Oklahoma City Community College. There he implemented a competency based, self-paced curriculum using state-of-the-art technology, a project that drew national attention during the 1970s. He helped to design one of the state’s finest and best fine arts buildings at OCCC. Owen retired in 1987, was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 1999, and died in 2004.
